Happy Sunday evening!! We have had a lot of DMs about Harry’s security fight and how it relates to royal security in general. I thought we should answer some of those questions here since it’s such a hot topic. I think there’s many questions regarding his security because much of what Harry says is frankly, untrue. It’s the first out, first to be believed, and it grabs the headlines. That’s a well-used PR tool of Meghan and Harry’s. The truth is lost in the wash and they know it. So, let’s answer a few here.
Could you address the issue of an IPP status in relation to Harry’s failed bid for 24-hour security?
IPP stands for an Internationally Protected Person(s) and this status usually affords an IPP free, universal security protection when visiting foreign countries. This applies to the individual and their families, both are covered. IPP status includes heads of state, diplomats, and high-ranking members of certain royal families. It is a classification for government related positions; it is not for celebrities. The United Nations has an agreement about IPP and all countries that have signed it, agree to offer government funded security while IPP are in their country.
Harry has often represented himself as an IPP in interviews and claims that status cannot be removed from him, as he was born with it. There seems to be a disconnect for Harry. He thinks his IPP status follows him as a person, a birthright, when it stemmed from his job as a working royal. Before that, his parents’ governmental roles. Having the courts assert that Harry is deserving of 24-hour security, would have given great strength to his argument that his IPP status is still in effect. And would have likely granted him government funded security throughout the world, including while living in the US. Another important issue is the status and “marketability” of keeping that IPP status in relation to still being seen as “royal”. Are you really royal if governments won’t provide you free security?
And this too, strikes at the heart of Harry’s argument that Charles is to blame for withdrawing his security. That type of smokescreen shifts the focus away from the true reality, Harry’s no longer in the same danger because he’s not a working royal. He does not have the same presence worldwide, the same status. Indeed, he’s actually demanding a higher level of security than he had as a working royal.
And, five years on from leaving the Royal Family, his status as a working royal, had he stayed, would have continued to decline and that would have been seen in his lower security status too.
I think it’s interesting to note that royals do not always get their travel plans approved because of security costs. The summer Diana died, she had planned a vacation to the U.S. for herself and the boys. But, it was ultimately rejected because of the security costs and potential threats at that time. I cannot conceive of a royal and their family demanding to live abroad, with those security costs, being approved. Everything has limits.

What do you think the true cost is of H&M’s annual security?
I love this question because I don’t think it’s talked about enough. I do not think they spend several million a year on security and these are my reasons. One, the security they use on a day-to-day basis is a small, local firm. One of the paparazzi shots of Harry out playing with his dogs included a bodyguard who had on a lanyard, with his security firm’s name on it. A simple zoom in and we were able to read the firm’s name and google them. They were a small, local place that boasted about using unmarked cars, which is standard for security firms. (And we discussed this at the time the pictures were released, but we didn’t identify the firm.) This was not an international security firm, which Meghan and Harry use during big events. You know the headlines, “Harry and Meghan Use Taylor Swift’s Bodyguard!” But, it should really read… for one night only. Those splashy security firms are not the norm for Meghan and Harry.
Also, Meghan and Harry do not have 24/7 security that stays at their home. I was shocked by this. Although they live in a gated community, TMZ has reported that when they had a trespasser on their property, when Meghan, Harry, nor the children were home, there was no security at their house. (This was noted from information filed on the sheriff’s report.) So, they depend on neighborhood security to maintain the safety of their house when not home. If the public has an image of guard dogs and security patrolling the Sussex home 24/7, they would be wrong.
I think they are paying well under a million a year on security and that can also be covered as a business expense or by the Archewell Foundation, depending on the reason for it. I think it’s a large expense, but nothing in the range that’s reported by the media. Again, it’s for headlines.
Why is he so obsessed with security?
I think most would say, for obvious reasons. But, I do think it’s larger than that. I think for Harry, the issue of who pays for his security is wrapped up in all the emotions. Rebecca English reported after Harry’s BBC interview that palace sources told her Harry was aware that his government funded security could be stopped and this was discussed with him at the Sandringham Summit. I think Harry wants his Father to step in and pay for the security. Clearly, it would be private and not through the government. And I think Charles feels that Harry has multiple trust funds from various family members, they left their working royal lives to make money simply by lying about Harry’s family, and he can foot his own security bill. Harry is trying to make this a litmus test about love to grab headlines. I think he will try to use it as justification for another book. And I don’t think that will play well with the public.
